Tom Sanford 2013, Oil on wood, 40” x 48”. This painting, probably exhibited as part of Sanford’s 2013 exhibition “Cafe des Artists” at Kravets Wehby Gallery. The picture casts famed NY art writer and champion of the downtown art scene, Carlo McCormick as the bartender at Lit Lounge, a well known art bar and gallery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The picture is Sanford’s first of several riffs on Manet’s “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère” painting from 1882. In Sanford’s version McCormick is severing deceased New York artist and bad boy, Dash Snow.
